# MUTCD Sign Compliance: Codes, Sizes & Reflective Sheeting

Our regulatory, warning, school and work-zone signs are built to the **Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)** — the FHWA standard that governs sign shape, color, legend, size and reflectivity on U.S. roads. This guide explains how to read a sign code, pick a legal size, and choose the right reflective sheeting so your order passes inspection.

## Reading an MUTCD code

Each sign carries a code like [`R1-1`](https://www.trafficthingz.com/products/mutcd-r1-1-30-stop-sign) or [`W11-2`](https://www.trafficthingz.com/products/mutcd-w11-2-30-crosswalk-sign). The _letter_ is the sign category and the _numbers_ identify the specific sign within it. Match the code on your plan set to the code on the product — it's the fastest way to be sure you're ordering the exact sign the engineer specified.

| Prefix | Category | What it covers | Example |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `R` | Regulatory | Laws a driver must obey — stop, yield, speed limit, no parking. | [R1-1 Stop](https://www.trafficthingz.com/products/mutcd-r1-1-30-stop-sign), [R2-1 Speed Limit](https://www.trafficthingz.com/products/mutcd-r2-1-speed-limit-sign) |
| `W` | Warning | Diamonds alerting to a hazard or change ahead — yellow for permanent conditions; the W20–W25 work-zone series uses the same W codes on orange. | W1-1 Curve, [W20-1 Road Work Ahead](https://www.trafficthingz.com/products/mutcd-w20-1-road-work-ahead) |
| `S` | School | School zones, crossings and speed limits around campuses. | [S1-1 School Crossing](https://www.trafficthingz.com/products/mutcd-s1-1-school-crosswalk-sign) |
| `M` | Route Marker | Route/highway shields and auxiliaries. | M1-1 Route Marker |
| `D / G` | Guide / Service | Destinations, distances and general service information. | D1-1 Destination |
| `OM` | Object Marker | Striped markers flagging obstructions in or alongside the roadway. | OM3-R Object Marker |

California and several other states publish **supplements** (codes like `SC9A` or `SW24-1`) that add state-specific signs on top of the federal set — check your local DOT's supplement when a code starts with two letters.

## Choosing a legal size

The MUTCD sets a **minimum size by road class**: the faster and busier the road, the larger the required sign. A stop sign that's compliant on a residential street may be undersized on an expressway. Every product's spec sheet lists its available sizes — confirm the size against the road type before ordering, and step up a size when in doubt about sight distance.

## Reflective sheeting grades

Reflectivity is what keeps a sign legible at night, and the MUTCD sets **minimum retroreflectivity** levels that signs must maintain over their life. Sheeting grade (ASTM D4956) is the brightness-vs-longevity tradeoff — brighter, longer-life sheeting costs more up front but defers replacement.

| Sheeting grade | Typical service life | Brightness | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Engineer Grade (Type I) | ~7 yr | Standard | Economy & temporary signs; lower-speed/low-traffic roads. |
| High Intensity Prismatic (Type IV) | ~10–12 yr | High | Most permanent regulatory & warning signs. |
| Diamond Grade (Type XI) | ~12 yr | Brightest | Highways, high-speed & safety-critical signs. |

Service-life figures are typical manufacturer warranties and vary by climate and orientation; see each product's spec sheet for its rated grade and warranty.

!

Compliance tip

If an inspector signs off on retroreflectivity, match the sheeting grade to the road class before you order — Engineer Grade can fail a high-speed corridor that wants High Intensity Prismatic or Diamond Grade. Not sure? Send us the road type and we'll spec the grade.

Speccing S-series signs or beacons? Fluorescent yellow-green sheeting and solar flashers have their own selection rules — see our guide to [choosing solar flashing, school-zone & radar speed signs](https://www.trafficthingz.com/guides/choosing-solar-flashing-school-zone-signs). And for temporary orange signage and device layout, the [work-zone traffic control setup](https://www.trafficthingz.com/guides/work-zone-traffic-control-setup) guide walks the full sequence.
